Cleon’s drawings feel like they date back to Roman times. His work depicts warriors and battles and illustrates the deeply rooted struggle in human nature between power and submission. He first joined the League in 2017 (Group C, sold out). For Season 9 he returns with a brand new design.
Cleon Peterson depicts never-ending battles as social commentary. Hulky warriors fight against blank backdrops and sometimes sprawl across city streets. Painted in acrylic, the colour palette is dramatic – made up mostly of black, white, yellow and red. Imagery is bold, crisp and hard-edged. This style draws from a range of influences. In particular Ancient Greek vases and the artist's past-profession as a graphic designer. The works also include references which symbolise the horrors of humanity. Namely, fascist WWII propaganda posters. By nodding to their high contrast hues and stark shapes, Peterson draws a direct line between historical authoritarian violence and its echoes today.
The League Extraordinaire is a football scarf project that was established in 2015 by Dutch design studio Kern. Every year four of Kern's favorite artists are invited to join The League Extraordinaire (TLE). The number of scarves produced is limited to a one time run for which fans need to pre-order, with a minimum of 60.
The scarves are made from high quality yarn. The type of scarf that both hooligans and members of VIP lounges wear to show their club-love. Every scarf is produced in the EU in a single run, sent in a solid carton box that fits through a standard letter box, tagged with a numbered edition-label.
The first 100 people to pre-order Cleon Peterson's Season 9 scarf pay €54 instead of €64.
The League Extraordinaire is a passion project for KERN, not a business run to make money. We price each scarf as close to cost as we can, covering the artist and production, with just enough left over to keep the project going.
From scarf 101 onward, the price returns to €64 incl. VAT.
